Lesson 2: Assess the current state. Before initiating any change.

It is important to understand the current situation and the gaps that need to be addressed. A thorough assessment of the current state can help to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of the organisation, as well as the readiness and resistance to change among the people involved.

Discovery is so important and often ignored/overlooked. It shows how ready the organisation is to accept the change and how the change is going to impact people. However this can’t be a single occurrence activity. Depending on the planned change, the exact method and approach is likely to be confirmed following any pilots or early deliver – therefore the impact assessment should be revisited to ensure it is still accurate.
